Award for wind farm substation

A PROJECT which heavily involved the expertise of AJ Engineering has scooped a top award and is in the running for another.

The AJE team fabricated and installed the structural steel and cladding for the Stronelairg substation and we are delighted to learn the building won the Sustainability and Resilience Award at the 2019 Scottish Civil Engineering Awards.

And the substation has also been nominated in the Institute of Civil Engineers Peoples’ Choice Awards.

AJ Engineering was awarded the contract in May 2017. It was secured through Global Infrastructure.

Stronelairg is a 66-turbine wind farm on the Garrogie Estate, South East of Fort Augustus. Stronelairg has an installed capacity of up to 228MW and sits in the Monadhliath Mountain range.

Graham Alexander, AJE’s general manager said: “This was a significant project for us and we are delighted to see it has won an award and that we were mentioned as part of that win. It’s great to see that it is up for a second award too.”

Graham added: “The building had to be built over 2000 feet above sea level in a very exposed location, so this made construction more challenging and meant the weather played a significant role in the movement of resources to the site. However, because the location is so exposed to the elements and it’s located in such an inhospitable environment there was no question the structure had to be fabricated using only the best products and engineering techniques to ensure its longevity.”

Another project that we were involved with was also a winner at the 2019 Scottish Civil Engineering Awards. Taking home the Infrastructure Award (Road) was the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. AJ Engineering designed, fabricated and installed a number of access staircases within the bridges crossing the River Don and River Dee.
